Our DPT Bespoke trans-pack is fully designed in house after many years of 4-wheel driving, towing, and touring with my own 200 series and understanding the frustrations and shortcomings of the transmission. We have fully customized our own transmission tune and torque convertor lock up to fix the issues of this transmission.
Two problems require two solutions:
Part 1: Transmission tune/remap
We have altered the shift pattern so when driving with light throttle in “drive” around town the transmission shifts a lot shorter/closer together to reduce the rpm between gear changes. The transmission in standard form holds gears too long between changes. We have brought 6th gear to a more usable speed of around 105 km/h (subject to your tyre size). From the factory, 6th gear is around 115 – 120km/h depending on the year (pre and post facelift)
We have applied more “torque convertor lock-up” to 5th and 6th gear to stop the taco constantly flaring when you are on the highway. The flaring of the taco is the “torque convertor” going between lock and unlock. This setting/programming from the manufacturer does not suit Australian driving conditions. We have re-programmed the lock-up to hold in these gears to give you better drivability and help to improve fuel economy.
Part 2: Bespoke transmission lock-up kit
We have our own Bespoke transmission lock-up kit designed to work in sync with our transmission tune. This lock-up kit is activated by simply moving the gear selector to “sports mode” to engage it and moving it back to drive to dis-engage the lock-up and can all be done on the fly. Engaging the torque convertor lock-up allows the transmission to be driven in manual mode. The torque convertor will automatically lock-up from 38 km/h in second gear and stay locked though to 6th gear. When you are slowing down, the “locked” torque convertor greatly improves engine braking, similarly to a manual transmission, for those times going down big hills and ranges. Our Bespoke transmission lock-up kit will also automatically un-lock the torque convertor below 35 km/h, to allow the transmission to function normally and not stall the engine.
If you are 4-wheel driving in low range and have selected “sports mode”, our lock-up kit will engage low speed lock-up from 8 km/h to give you maximum power and torque to the wheels for those very slippery and boggy conditions.
By controlling the torque convertor when in drive through our custom transmission tune and combining this with our Bespoke transmission lock-up kit, this gives you the ultimate transmission pack.
Our Ultimate trans-pack was designed for the Land Cruiser 200 series and is also available for some Hilux and Prado models.
