From Our Gold Coast Workshop

Diesel Performance Tune has a brand new 4WD Dyno. An aftermarket exhaust + dyno tune = maximum safe power. We test exhausts on our dyno. The dyno doesn’t lie.

1. Exhaust Basics – Why It Matters

Your diesel’s exhaust system does three things:

  1. Removes gases from the engine
  2. Reduces noise (via mufflers)
  3. Filters emissions (via DPF – Diesel Particulate Filter)

Why upgrade your exhaust?

  • Less restriction = turbo spools faster = less lag
  • Lower EGTs (exhaust gas temperatures) = safer towing
  • More power (when combined with a dyno tune)
  • Better fuel economy

The restriction points in a stock exhaust:

Restriction How Bad
Crushed pipes Moderate
Small diameter (2.25″-2.5″) Moderate
Mufflers Minor
DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) Major

Key point: The DPF is the biggest restriction. But you can’t just remove it (illegal in Australia).

2. What is a DPF Back Exhaust?

A DPF back exhaust (also called “cat-back” for petrol) replaces everything after the DPF.

What’s included:

  • Original DPF stays in place
  • New pipes from DPF to the rear
  • New muffler (or straight pipe)
  • New exhaust tip

What’s NOT included:

  • The DPF itself (remains stock)
  • The downpipe (from turbo to DPF)

DPF back exhaust benefits:

  • ✅ Legal (DPF remains)
  • ✅ Lower cost ($500-$1,200)
  • ✅ DIY-friendly
  • ✅ Slightly better flow
  • ✅ Better sound

DPF back exhaust drawbacks:

  • ❌ Minimal power gain (5-10hp)
  • ❌ DPF is still the main restriction
  • ❌ Turbo still has to push through stock DPF

Best for: Owners who want better sound and mild gains without legal risk.

3. What is a Turbo Back Exhaust System?

A turbo back exhaust system replaces everything from the turbo outlet to the rear.

What’s included:

  • New downpipe (turbo to DPF or where DPF was)
  • New mid-pipe
  • New rear section
  • New muffler
  • Either: DPF delete pipe (illegal) OR high-flow DPF (legal but expensive)

Turbo back exhaust benefits:

  • ✅ Maximum flow (turbo spools much faster)
  • ✅ Significant power gain (15-30hp before tune)
  • ✅ Huge turbo lag reduction
  • ✅ Lower EGTs (safer towing)

Turbo back exhaust drawbacks:

  • ❌ Expensive ($1,500-$3,500+)
  • ❌ Legal issues if DPF is deleted
  • ❌ Can be too loud
  • ❌ Requires professional installation

Best for: Enthusiasts who want maximum performance and are willing to navigate legal requirements.

4. DPF Back vs Turbo Back – Side by Side

Feature DPF Back Exhaust Turbo Back Exhaust
What’s replaced DPF to rear Turbo to rear
DPF status Stock DPF remains High-flow DPF or delete (illegal)
Cost $500-$1,200 $1,500-$3,500+
Power gain (no tune) 5-10hp 15-30hp
Power gain (with dyno tune) 10-20hp 30-50hp
Turbo lag reduction 10-20% 40-60%
Sound improvement Moderate Significant
Legal in QLD Yes Only with high-flow DPF
Installation Easy (bolt-on) Complex
Best for Sound + mild gains Maximum performance

The dyno doesn’t lie: On our brand new 4WD dyno, a turbo back exhaust + tune makes twice the power of a DPF back + tune.

5. 3 Inch Turbo Back Exhaust – Is It Worth It?

Search volume for 3 inch turbo back exhaust is 90/mo – it’s the most popular size.

Why 3 inches?

  • Stock exhausts are 2.25″-2.5″
  • 3″ flows 40-60% more air
  • Ideal for 2.5L-3.2L diesel 4WDs (HiLux, Ranger, D-Max, Triton)

3″ turbo back exhaust real results (tested on our dyno):

Vehicle Stock Power 3″ Turbo Back Only 3″ Turbo Back + Dyno Tune
Toyota HiLux 2.8L 130kW 145kW (+15kW) 170kW (+40kW)
Ford Ranger 3.2L 147kW 162kW (+15kW) 190kW (+43kW)
Isuzu D-Max 3.0L 140kW 155kW (+15kW) 180kW (+40kW)

The pattern: Exhaust alone = small gain. Exhaust + dyno tune = big gain.

Our recommendation: If you’re doing a 3″ turbo back exhaust, do the dyno tune at the same time on our brand new 4WD dyno.

6. Aftermarket Exhaust – Legalities in QLD

Search volume for aftermarket exhaust is 260/mo – people want to know what’s legal.

QLD exhaust laws (Gold Coast):

Rule Requirement
Noise limit 90dB for diesels (tested at 3,750 RPM or half max power)
DPF removal Illegal – $2,500+ fine, defect notice, insurance void
Emissions Must meet ADR (Australian Design Rules)
Ground clearance Exhaust cannot reduce clearance
Exit location Cannot exit under passenger compartment

Legal aftermarket exhaust options on the Gold Coast:

Option Legal? Notes
DPF back exhaust ✅ Yes DPF remains, emissions unchanged
Turbo back WITH high-flow DPF ✅ Yes Expensive but legal
Turbo back WITH DPF delete ❌ No Illegal – don’t do it
Straight pipe (no muffler) ❌ No Exceeds noise limits

Our advice: Keep the DPF. Do a DPF back exhaust or a high-flow DPF turbo back. Don’t risk the fines.

7. Does an Exhaust Need a Dyno Tune?

Short answer: Not required, but highly recommended.

Why an exhaust + dyno tune is the ultimate combo:

Scenario Result
Stock exhaust + dyno tune Good power gain
Aftermarket exhaust + stock tune Small power gain (wasted potential)
Aftermarket exhaust + dyno tune Maximum power gain (the real result)

What we do on our brand new 4WD dyno:

  1. Baseline run (stock exhaust + stock tune)
  2. Install aftermarket exhaust
  3. Second run (exhaust only – see the gain)
  4. Custom ECU remap for the new exhaust
  5. Final run (exhaust + tune – see the real gain)

The dyno doesn’t lie. We show you every step.

9. FAQ

Q: DPF back exhaust vs turbo back – which is better?
A: Turbo back makes more power but is more expensive and has legal considerations. DPF back is legal, cheaper, but milder gains.

Q: Is a 3 inch turbo back exhaust worth it on a diesel?
A: Yes – but only if you also get a dyno tune. Exhaust alone = small gain. Exhaust + tune = big gain.

Q: Is an aftermarket exhaust legal on the Gold Coast?
A: DPF back exhausts are legal. Turbo back exhausts are legal ONLY if they keep a DPF (high-flow DPF is fine). DPF delete is illegal.

Q: Will an exhaust void my warranty?
A: A DPF back exhaust is usually fine. A turbo back exhaust may void your engine warranty.

Q: Does an exhaust need a tune?
A: Not required, but you’re leaving power on the table without one. We tune for exhausts on our brand new 4WD dyno.

Q: How much power does a 3″ turbo back exhaust add?
A: 15-30hp without tune. 30-50hp with a custom dyno tune.

Q: Where can I get an exhaust + dyno tune on the Gold Coast?
A: Buy and install your exhaust at an exhaust shop. Then come to Diesel Performance Tune for the dyno tune on our brand new 4WD dyno.

Summary: Which Exhaust Should You Buy?

Your Goal Best Exhaust Need a Dyno Tune?
Better sound, mild gains DPF back Optional
Maximum power Turbo back (with high-flow DPF) Yes – essential
Legal and safe DPF back No
Towing heavy loads Turbo back + high-flow DPF Yes – essential for EGTs

The dyno doesn’t lie: An exhaust without a tune is wasted potential. Do both.
